why trans people are frustrated at HP fan creators

part of the reason why people are frustrated at HP fan creators right now is:

  1. go block and unfollow JK Rowling.
  2. Rowling’s been violently vocal about her transphobia and other bigotries for ages now, yet you are still vocally positive about an IP that is currently benefiting her.
  3. we absolutely have bigger fish to fry in the war for trans rights, but frying those fish requires doing a lot of things that take time, money, etc. we’re not asking you to *do* anything this time around, yet you still won’t not do it.

it’s super easy not to make HP creations. i’m not making HP creations right now; it’s great!

Don’t participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them.

Ephesians 5:11. This wording is taken from the CSB (Christian Standard Bible) version. I’ve made my disgust of Christian extremism loud and clear. However, as a recovering exvangelical, I love being able to throw “conservative” values back at conservatives.

Seriously, y’all, this is the game you’re dying on a hill for? It looks like ass! A mobile game with a slightly higher art budget. Fruitless works of darkness indeed.

The Common English Bible translation of the same verse and the one after it is this: “and don’t participate in the unfruitful actions of darkness. Instead, you should reveal the truth about them. It’s embarrassing to even talk about what certain persons do in secret.”

The Contemporary English Version pulls no punches: “Don’t take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are. It is disgusting even to talk about what is done in the dark.”

TLDR: Don’t bother with this junk. You know what’s a wholesome game with an actual art style that’s really fu to play: Ooblets! It’s got dance battles, it’s got monster collecting, it’s got farming and recycling, and it’s got a mayor who wears a rainbow top hat on her pigtails! It’s also significantly cheaper than Hogwarts Loser-y and an indie game, so you’d actually be supporting some developers instead of pretending you are in order to obfuscate the fact that you’re buying a product that benefits a bigoted billionaire.

The Hogwash Legacy developers have already been paid. You buying it now doesn’t support them or anyone else who actually worked on the game, it supports Rowling and the Warner Brothers shareholders.

we see you not doing things for trans rights, and we see you not *not* doing things for trans rights, yet you claim trans rights are human rights anyway. it feels like you won’t put your money where your mouth is.

it’s one thing if HP creations are how you pay the bills, but if you’re a “hobbyist” creator, can you at least not be so vocal about this fandom right now?

get your house out of your bio at the absolute bare minimum.

i don’t care if you post your stuff alongside an “i do not support rowling’s bigotry” disclaimer. HP is still alive and kicking in the public consciousness. we’ve seen people kill other fandoms before, yet you won’t kill this one.

you killed off Game of Thrones for a terrible ending.

yet you won’t do the same when an IP becomes embroiled in transphobia (or any of the other bigotries she’s peddled throughout the years).

we see what you’re doing.

we also see what you’re not doing.

i get where you may be coming from. i used fanworks to escape the misogyny of CW Flash canon. at the end of the day, i want what i’m sure you want too: for canon to be free of bigotry. But that’s not going to happen while bigots are at the helm of these franchises.

And right now, rowling is at the helm of HP. show me that you can accomplish what your heroes did: defeat a very powerful, very evil person.

a person who wants me and people like me miserable and hunted and dead.

“HFE, thank you for creating and sharing so much art and writing for free. How can we help turn your passion and skills into a full-time gig?”

I’m glad you asked!

If you can give me a one-time tip, head over to ko-fi. I’ve also got emotes and icons you can buy.

If you can commit to a monthly tip, you can set that up via twitch or patreon. Twitch also lets you set up alternate payment schedules: every three months and every six months. Ko-fi lets you set up monthly payments now, too!

You can also buy some characters and critters I’ve designed on toyhouse.

And if you have no money to spare (understandable), one way you can help me out is by commenting and using as many share buttons as possible. Commenting gives me feedback on what works y’all are passionate about. Sharing helps expose my works to new people. The bigger my audience grows, the more audience members with money will encounter my works.

Thank you for taking time to read this. I hope you enjoy what you’ve found here.
